Beat the heat back with fantastic fun. Indulge in these sizzling summer activities in and around Hillsboro, OR.

1. August Summer Bash

The Rice Museum of Rocks & Minerals at 26385 NW Groveland Dr. serves up plenty of exhibits for geology lovers year-round. Summer’s a special time, though, because this unique museum is brimming with great events like gem carving workshops that quickly sell out.

And the big August bash sends summer out in style with an incredible scavenger hunt (including glow-in-the-dark festivities), popcorn parties, raffles, and live music. Kids will fill their time easily during activities ranging from a dinosaur bounce castle to geode cracking demonstrations. This truly ‘rock-and-roll’ extravaganza makes learning a delight.

2. Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve

Over 600 glorious acres await at this 2600 SW Hillsboro Hwy wetlands paradise. A beautiful wildlife trail offers scenic views of majestic animals on land, air, and water. Bobcats, beavers, otters, and bald eagles are just a few of the animals that call this region home. Connect with these animals in a whole new way at the education center, where hands-on activities and exhibits like an authentic bald eagle’s nest are on display.

During the Summer Spectacular, crafts, games, concessions, and animals combine for a memorable experience. Individuals can attend this annual event for $5, while children under three years of age get free access.

3. Washington County Fair Complex

The fairgrounds at 801 NE 34th Ave. are the place to be for all your outdoors summer fun. Concerts, trade shows, and much more take place at the grounds. A sports complex is also on-site.

The biggest event of the year, the Washington County Fair, brings community members together for a fabulous free experience in late July. Attend and you’ll never forget the sights, sounds, and smells of delicious food, thrilling rides, and Big Fair Frank himself.

4. Hillsboro Tuesday Marketplace

The heart of the city (E. Main St. and SE 2nd Ave.) hosts the festival of the summer on Tuesdays from mid-June until early September. Historic downtown’s summer festival always brings the unexpected. One night you might be enjoying a fashion show, while another night you’re whooping along at a rodeo or testing your talents at a cornhole and football tournament.

Embodying a big-time flea market feel, craft and food vendors aplenty keep you stocked up on handmade beauties and enticing delicacies such as dirty tacos. And Cruisin’ Tuesdays will give you renewed appreciation for automotive works of art. For a ride worthy of any car show, check out the Subaru Outback: a rough-and-tumble crossover SUV bestseller that’s made station wagons cool again.
