With the recent renaissance in purchasing books, Hillsboro, OR and the surrounding area has several interesting independent bookstores for those that have a passion or interest in reading.

Arcade Book Exchange

The Arcade Book Exchange is a place to mark down for a visit if you are looking for a broad selection of books. Nestled inside The Terrace Plaza building at 123 SE 3rd Avenue, the store is overflowing with volumes of the latest bestsellers and an exhaustive range of used books. The stark white bookcases that house the books by genre are lined up in rows to provide a simple but effective organization of the collections.

The store truly caters to the whole family. In one corner, you will discover a room that provides a self-contained children’s area. Not only does it have a wide array of kid’s fiction and non-fiction for the little ones to explore, but it also has a child-size table and chairs that allow them to sit in comfort and immerse themselves in the titles they have picked out.

Orenco Learning Club

One of Hillsboro’s more interesting establishments for the book aficionado is the Orenco Learning Club at 6281 NE Cherry Drive. Combining books and board games, it has become a hub for families to relax, play games and indulge in a passion for books. Inside is roomy, with plenty of tables and chairs that provide it with almost a classroom-like appearance.

Orenco’s holds various activities in-store, from readings to games tournaments, as well as running a chess club for kids. Their book section is more niched than general bookselling establishments and caters to geeky subjects. If you enjoy reading about math, computer science, and chess, then it is the perfect place as it covers these in depth.

Jan’s

If you take a short drive out to Beaverton, you will find Jan’s at 12320 SW and 1st Street. This award-winning business has been selling books since 1982. Initially situated just down the road in Aloha, it moved to its current location in 2018. Laid out beautifully with wooden-style bookshelves, it matches the decor of bare brick interior walls to luxurious reading armchairs and is worth a visit for the atmosphere alone.

Jan’s sells both new and used volumes covering a vast range of categories. The used section might be particularly fascinating if you want to exchange old books, as the store will offer credit against new purchases. If so, remember to pack the trunk of your Toyota Camry with your unwanted volumes before you leave.

There is little doubt that Hillsboro has much to appeal to those who relish perusing the shelves for a good book. After having enjoyed your day stocking up on your latest reads, pay us a visit at Royal Moore Auto Center today, and take the opportunity to review our latest models.
